Beyond the Beach: Greek Destinations With More to Discover

Greece may be famous for turquoise seas, hidden coves and long summer days by the water, but some of its most rewarding destinations offer far more than beautiful beaches. Step away from the coast and you will find mountain villages, ancient ruins, hiking trails, local wineries and centuries-old traditions that can turn a simple beach holiday into a much richer journey.

Naxos: Villages, Mountains and Local Flavours

Naxos has some of the finest sandy beaches in the Cyclades, but its interior is just as impressive. Head into the mountains and discover villages such as Halki, Filoti and Apeiranthos, where stone houses, small squares and traditional tavernas reveal a different side of island life.

Hikers can explore trails around Mount Zas, the highest peak in the Cyclades, while food lovers should look out for local cheeses, potatoes, citrus liqueur and dishes made with ingredients grown across the island.

Crete: An Island Made for Exploring

It would take far more than one holiday to discover everything Crete has to offer. Beyond its famous coastline are dramatic gorges, archaeological sites, historic cities and mountain communities where traditions remain part of everyday life.

Walk through Samaria Gorge, explore the Palace of Knossos, wander around Chania’s Old Town or drive into the mountains for lunch at a village taverna. Crete rewards travellers who leave plenty of room in their itinerary for spontaneous detours.

Corfu: Venetian Streets and Green Landscapes

Corfu combines the Ionian Sea with an island interior covered in olive groves, cypress trees and traditional villages. Its UNESCO-listed Old Town is one of the highlights, with Venetian architecture, narrow kantounia and impressive fortresses providing plenty to explore away from the beach.

For something different, follow part of the Corfu Trail or visit the villages of the island’s greener interior.

Rhodes: Much More Than a Resort Island

Rhodes offers an extraordinary combination of beach life and history. Behind the island’s popular resorts lies the medieval Old Town of Rhodes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with cobbled streets, fortified walls and centuries of history.

Further south, Lindos combines its famous whitewashed village with an ancient Acropolis, while the island’s interior offers forests, walking routes and quieter villages.

Kefalonia: Caves, Mountains and Villages

Kefalonia’s beaches may grab the headlines, but the island is equally rewarding inland. Explore Mount Ainos National Park, discover underground Melissani Lake and Drogarati Cave, or spend an afternoon wandering through villages surrounded by vineyards and olive groves.

See Another Side of Greece

A Greek holiday does not have to revolve entirely around the sea. Leave a day or two without plans, rent a car where necessary and head inland. Often, the village you had never heard of, the family-run taverna you find by chance or the mountain road you almost skipped becomes the part of Greece you remember most.
