The Best Greek Islands to Visit Without a Car

Dreaming of a Greek island holiday but not planning to rent a car? The good news is that some of Greece’s most beautiful islands are surprisingly easy to explore on foot or by public transport. Choosing the right destination means you can spend less time worrying about parking and driving—and more time enjoying beaches, local food and island life.

Hydra

Few islands make car-free travel feel as natural as Hydra. With cars and motorcycles largely absent, life here moves at a refreshingly different pace. Wander along the stone-paved lanes from the beautiful harbour, follow coastal paths to nearby swimming spots, or hop aboard a water taxi to discover beaches further around the island. And with Athens within easy reach, Hydra is perfect for a weekend escape without ever needing the keys.

Koufonisia

On Ano Koufonisi, distances are wonderfully short and there is little reason to rush anywhere. From the village, you can walk along the coast from one beach to the next, stopping at Finikas and Fanos before continuing towards the turquoise waters of Pori. Small boats offer an effortless alternative when you would rather save your energy for swimming. Here, walking isn’t simply transportation—it is part of the holiday.

Antiparos

Antiparos proves that you don’t need a car to enjoy the Cyclades. Its charming main town puts cafés, restaurants, shops and accommodation within an easy stroll, while local buses provide connections to beaches and other parts of the island. Days can unfold spontaneously: breakfast in town, an afternoon by the sea and dinner beneath the bougainvillea, all without worrying about parking or driving.

Skiathos

Want plenty of beaches without renting a car? Skiathos makes it surprisingly easy. A regular bus route runs from Skiathos Town along the island’s popular southern coastline, stopping close to numerous beaches along the way. That means you can spend each day discovering somewhere new before returning to town for dinner, drinks and an evening stroll along the waterfront.

Symi

The first glimpse of Symi’s colourful harbour is reason enough to visit. Pastel neoclassical mansions climb the hillsides above Gialos, creating one of the most distinctive arrivals in the Dodecanese. Base yourself around the harbour and much of the town can be explored on foot, while small boats unlock hidden bays and secluded beaches that would otherwise be difficult to reach.

Leave the Keys Behind

Sometimes, the best way to experience a Greek island is to slow down and forget about driving altogether. Choose somewhere with a walkable town, convenient buses or regular boat connections and suddenly getting around becomes part of the adventure. Fewer logistics, no parking and more time for what really matters: swimming, exploring, eating well and enjoying island life at your own pace.
