Rizes Gastro Taverna: A Taste of Santorini Above the Caldera

There is a moment in Santorini when the afternoon light begins to soften, the caldera turns golden and attention slowly shifts from exploring the island to deciding where the evening will lead. In Fira, Rizes Gastro Taverna offers an answer that goes beyond simply finding a table with a view.

Perched above the caldera, Rizes takes its inspiration from exactly what its name suggests: roots. Greek culinary traditions, Cycladic ingredients and the flavours people grow up with are at the heart of its philosophy, but nostalgia is not the objective. Instead, familiar recipes and ingredients are approached with a contemporary perspective, creating food that feels unmistakably Greek without being predictable.

Following a farm-to-table philosophy, the kitchen works with carefully selected ingredients from Santorini, the Cyclades and other parts of Greece. The menu celebrates local produce and Mediterranean flavours, bringing together dishes inspired by Greek culinary tradition with a fresh, contemporary character. It is another way for visitors to discover the island — beyond its famous landscapes and through the flavours of Greece.

The setting makes the experience even more memorable. Stone, natural textures and understated Cycladic details create a relaxed atmosphere, while the terraces open towards sweeping views of the caldera and the Aegean Sea. Arrive while the sun is still high and the scenery commands attention; stay into the evening and the mood gradually changes as the lights come on and Santorini takes on a completely different character.

Wine is naturally part of the story. The cellar brings together labels from Santorini, Greece and international vineyards, while wine and olive oil tastings invite travellers to explore some of the flavours and products that have shaped Greek gastronomy for generations. There is also a private cellar dining experience for those looking for something more intimate.

As night falls, music becomes part of the atmosphere, allowing dinner to evolve naturally into a longer evening.

Santorini may be a destination people first fall for through photographs, but its most memorable moments are often found away from the camera, around a table, sharing food, opening a bottle of wine and watching the caldera disappear into the night.

At Rizes, those moments remain firmly connected to the flavours and traditions that inspired its name.
