Mykonos After August: Why September and October Might Be the Best Time to Visit

Γιατί η Μύκονος είναι ακόμη καλύτερη μετά τον Αύγουστο

For most travellers, Mykonos is synonymous with July and August. Busy beaches, legendary nightlife and an island moving at full speed, but once the peak of summer begins to fade, a different side of Mykonos starts to emerge.

September and the first weeks of October can be an excellent time to visit if you want more space, a slower pace and, especially in September, plenty of summer still in the air.

Mykonos at a Slower Pace

September doesn’t mean that Mykonos has gone quiet. The island is still very much alive, only without quite the same intensity as August. Beaches feel more relaxed, wandering through Mykonos Town becomes more enjoyable, and sitting down for dinner or a drink overlooking the Aegean doesn’t always come with the rush of peak season.

That balance is precisely what makes this time of year so appealing: Mykonos hasn’t closed for the season,  it has simply slowed down.

Summer Doesn’t End in August

The calendar may say September, but summer still has plenty to offer in Mykonos. Swimwear remains essential, with beaches such as Agios Ioannis, Ornos, Psarou, Elia and Agios Stefanos retaining their summer atmosphere, only with fewer crowds and more room to enjoy the sea.

As October progresses, the weather becomes less predictable. But that can also change the rhythm of the trip, creating more opportunities to explore, enjoy long meals and discover parts of the island beyond its famous beaches.

Mykonos Town Without the August Rush

A quiet morning in Mykonos Town is reason enough to consider travelling at this time of year. Wander through Matogianni, get lost among the whitewashed lanes, pass the iconic windmills and continue towards Little Venice.

With fewer people around, there is more time to stop along the way, take photographs or simply sit down for coffee without watching the clock. As afternoon turns to evening, Little Venice remains one of the island’s most beautiful spots to watch the sun disappear into the Aegean.

Discover Mykonos Beyond the Familiar

With less traffic and fewer crowds, this is also a good opportunity to venture beyond the island’s best-known places. Spend some time in Ano Mera, seek out smaller beaches and follow roads you might easily overlook during a packed summer weekend.

A visit to Delos can add an entirely different dimension to your stay. When ferry schedules and weather conditions allow, this extraordinary archaeological site is just a short boat ride from Mykonos and makes for one of the most fascinating day trips in the Cyclades.

So, Why Visit After August?

Because this is when Mykonos gives you a little more time to actually enjoy it. Start the morning without a strict itinerary, stay at the beach for another swim, linger over lunch by the sea and discover corners of the island that can easily be missed during the height of summer.

Fewer crowds, slower days and more time to experience Mykonos on your own terms.

Continue Your Escape at Contejean Villas

When discovering Mykonos at a slower pace, where you stay can make all the difference. Set in the peaceful area of Kamalafka, Contejean Villas offers a quieter way to experience the island, away from its busiest spots while keeping its beaches, villages and Mykonos Town within easy reach.

Occupying a tranquil, elevated setting with beautiful views across the Mykonian landscape, the villas are just a five-minute drive from Mykonos Airport and approximately ten minutes from Mykonos Town and the New Port. Ornos and Psarou are also nearby, while Ano Mera offers the chance to discover a more traditional side of island life.

This balance makes Contejean Villas particularly well suited to a September or October escape. Spend the day discovering beaches and villages, head into Mykonos Town for dinner and an evening stroll, and then return to the peace and privacy of your own villa.

Close enough to everything, yet far enough from the crowds, Contejean Villas can become your base for discovering Mykonos at your own pace — exactly as a post-peak-summer escape should feel.
