Athens International Airport Breaks Records: Nearly 4 Million Passengers in July

Athens continues to strengthen its position on the international travel map, with Athens International Airport recording particularly strong passenger numbers at the height of the summer season.

In July 2026, approximately 3.93 million passengers travelled through Athens International Airport, marking an increase of 4.7% compared with July 2025.

International Traffic Drives Growth

International travel played a key role in July’s performance. International passenger traffic increased by 5.3%, while domestic traffic also moved higher, recording 3.4% growth compared with the same month last year.

The figures highlight Athens’ growing appeal as an international destination, as well as its important role as one of the main gateways for travellers heading to the Greek islands and destinations across the country.

And the upward trend goes well beyond July. From the beginning of 2026 through the end of the month, Athens International Airport welcomed a total of 19.68 million passengers, representing an increase of 4.5% year-on-year.

Athens Continues to Gain Momentum

This year’s performance follows an already strong 2025. Last year, passenger traffic at Athens International Airport reached almost 34 million travellers, setting a new annual record.

At the same time, expanding air connectivity and growing international demand are creating new opportunities for the Greek capital. Athens is no longer seen simply as a stop on the way to the islands. With its cultural attractions, food scene and increasing number of international connections, the city has developed into a strong city-break destination in its own right.

With the summer travel season still in full swing, July’s figures offer another indication of Athens’ growing importance in Greek tourism and its position as one of the country’s busiest gateways for international travellers.
