Greece Tops Norwegian Summer Holiday Choices

The summer season may have been slow to “warm up” for Norwegian travellers, but their return to their favourite Greek destinations is now both dynamic and undeniable. Despite the initial hesitation that marked the beginning of the summer, Greece remains the undisputed leader in the preferences of travellers from the North.

After a period of waiting—mainly due to the unstable international environment and geopolitical uncertainty in the Middle East—Norwegians have returned to booking holidays in large numbers. According to Anne Mørk-Løwengreen, Communications Manager at TUI Norway, weather conditions played a decisive role: heavy rainfall and low temperatures in western and northern Norway acted as a “catalyst”, encouraging travellers to seek the guaranteed sunshine of Greece.

The figures speak for themselves: more than 90% of charter flight seats for June have already been sold, while July is expected to operate at full capacity.

Greece at the Top: Crete, Rhodes and the Rise of Samos

Greece continues to inspire confidence among Norwegian travellers. During periods of uncertainty, they tend to choose destinations they consider a “safe haven”.

Crete remains firmly at the top of the list, serving as the ultimate attraction for Norwegian tourists. Rhodes follows closely behind, earning its place among the leading destinations by combining its rich history with modern tourism infrastructure.

At the same time, Samos and Zakynthos are emerging as the two “stars” of this year’s season. Samos recorded an impressive 30% increase in bookings within just one week, with TUI attributing its success to the island’s authentic landscape and ease of travel. Meanwhile, Zakynthos continues to capture the hearts of younger travellers, boosted by the viral popularity of Navagio Beach on social media.

Norwegian Travel Preferences in Numbers

Among short-haul destinations, Norwegian travellers rank their choices as follows: Crete, Mallorca, Rhodes, Gran Canaria and Cyprus, which is also showing a notable recovery. They are followed by Samos, Bulgaria, Turkey, Zakynthos and Croatia, completing the list of the ten most popular destinations.

Although Europe continues to dominate holiday choices, travellers looking for more exotic experiences and better value for money are increasingly turning towards long-haul destinations. Mauritius has recorded a 22% increase in demand, while Vietnam has seen an impressive 150% surge compared with last summer. Other leading long-distance destinations include Zanzibar, the Maldives and Thailand.

“Today’s travellers are looking for familiarity, safety and quality. Greece offers exactly this combination, which is why it remains their first choice,” concludes Mørk-Løwengreen.

With the summer season reaching its peak, Greek hospitality is once again preparing to welcome visitors from the North, reaffirming the strong bonds that have been built over decades between Norwegian travellers and Greece.
