Candidate for “European Museum of the Year”

The museum of ancient Eleftherna – the first museum of archaeological sites in Crete and the fourth analogue in Greece following the Olympia, Delphi and Vergina museums – aims to “travel” all visitors at the dawn of Greek civilization and Homer, to give them the opportunity to admire a great number of finds from the long archaeological excavation, which, in an unscathed, natural landscape, is a pole of attraction of diverse tourism from all over the world.
The three rooms of the Museum host the whole history of the city from 3,000 BC. to 1,300 AD: four and a half millennia with objects of everyday life and works of art from prehistory, geometric, archaic, classical, hellenistic, Roman and early Byzantine and Byzantine years.
The museum was built with funding from the NSRF, the University of Crete and the Ministry of Culture, as well as from Grecotel, Onassis Foundation, Alpha Bank, as well as other organizations, institutions, institutions and individuals.
Eleftherna was in ancient times a town in the present prefecture of Rethymno, 30 kilometers southeast of the city of Rethymno, at an altitude of 380 meters.
